About Craig
Craig Information
Founded in 1980, The Craig School is an independent, non-profit school responding to the needs of students in 3rd through 12th grades who have diagnosed learning differences or difficulty succeeding in a traditional classroom setting. Over the years the school has promoted a solid educational program based on the most recent and effective multisensory classroom techniques, assistive technology, social skills curricula, and organizational methods. The school continues to provide a safe, nurturing learning environment with small structured classrooms, positive student-teacher interaction and strong ties to parents.
Mission
The mission of the Craig School is to offer a strategy-based, comprehensive and challenging educational program for non-traditional learners who demonstrate academic potential. the program maximizes their learning potential; nurtures their social, emotional, moral and aesthetic growth; offers opportunities for students to serve their school and local communities; and provides a foundation for personal success throughout their academic careers and their lives.
Statement of Core Values
1. Learning differences and learning styles should be acknowledged, understood, and provided for.
2. In addition to supporting a student's academic development, a school should also nurture his/her social, emotional, and moral growth.
3. All students can and will learn if the right environment and opportunities are provided.
Our Students
The young people at Craig are of average to above average ability, but have not progressed at a level consistent with their abilities. Our students come to us with dyslexia and related learning difficulties. We address the social issues that so often plague young people with learning disorders and help them to build a positive self image. Students who would ultimately leave school feeling like failures are realizing at Craig that they can now read and write. Parents who have faced ongoing frustration with schools that expect their child to fit an existing program are finding that programs at Craig are designed to fit the child.
Our Goal
The Craig School recognizes and embraces the dual responsibility of education: 1) enabling students to learn what is worthy of knowing (content knowledge) by teaching the skills and strategies required to engage in meaningful learning; and 2) cultivating and nurturing in each student what it is to be a good person. At The Craig School we provide our students with the learning skills and strategies that will enable them to reach their potential, enrich and expand the quality of their own life, and cultivate an understanding and appreciation of giving back, of contributing to the common good.
Our Method
The success of The Craig School rests on a strong academic program and a supportive environment. Young people who have struggled often for years in mainstream schools are given the tools to overcome their frustration with learning. They are among peers who are tolerant and understanding of one another with teachers who are skilled, patient and focused on achievements, not failures.
We welcome the opportunity to make a difference in your child's life!
