Athletics

Physical activity and sports promote physical, emotional, and social well-being.  Students with language-based learning disabilities may find it difficult to be included in athletic activities.

At The Craig School, physical activity and sports are a fully inclusive, no-cut program promoting (a) gross motor skill development and increased spatial awareness, (b) collaboration, communication, and responsible decision making, (c) goal setting and time management, (d) self-esteem and self-confidence, and most importantly, (e) a positive, safe space to explore the physical arts, learn from one another, and develop friendships.

The physical activity and sports program at The Craig School is based on the 5 C’s of Positive Youth Development Model:

  • Connection: A feeling of safety, structure, and belonging; positive bonds with people and social institutions.
  • Confidence: A sense of self-worth and mastery; having a belief in one’s capacity to succeed.
  • Character: Taking responsibility; a sense of independence and individuality; connection to principles and values.
  • Competence: The ability to act effectively at school, in social situations, and in the community.
  • Contribution: Active participation and leadership in a variety of settings; making a difference.
