The 5th class of graduating seniors filed into Halloran Hall at St. Joseph's Parish in Lincoln Park on June 6th to celebrate the culmination of four years of secondary school education.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Headmaster, David Blanchard, and Board President, Robert Boglioli. Director Eric Caparulo provided the students and their families with a brief history of commencement speeches dating back to 1840. He went on to quote from various commencement speakers such as Will Ferrell and John Stewart of the Daily Show whose somewhat irreverent advice was reinterpreted by Mr. Caparulo to apply in meaningful ways to the graduates.

Following the presentation of the Genesis Award, 2004 alumnus Joe Singleton, who is considering enrolling in an MBA program in the fall, delivered the invited address. Assistant Director Beth Stein also addressed the graduates followed by the class valedictorian and presentation of the class gift. The latter was an outdoor grill which will see much service in the years to come during the upper school's Spirit Days.

The final event, of course, was the presentation of the diplomas which took place amid a riot of flashing cameras, proud parents and smiling faculty members. A day to remember!

Each year members of the 8th grade class celebrate their end-of-middle-school tenure with a two-day trip to Baltimore. Despite a late start on Thursday morning because their bus was delayed, this year's class of 8th graders arrived in Baltimore in time for a Camden Yards tour. Following lunch and shopping for hats and sun glasses, the group saw the Dolphin show at the aquarium, took the Baltimore Duck Tour and had supper at the ESPN Zone. The only untoward happening was occasioned by "Captain Crabby" whose amphibious Duck Tour vehicle clipped a car. Only a minor fender bender, though.

After spending the night at the Day's Inn, the students visited the B&O Railroad Museum, traveled to Fort McHenry by water taxi, and saw a 14 inning Orioles' game that lasted to the wee hours. Sometime in the midst of this busy schedule the kids had time for more souvenir shopping and swimming at the hotel.

A weary group arrived back at Craig early Saturday afternoon. All in all according to Mr. Furlong, it was a great trip!

Craig School is proud to announce that the upper school chess team took home honors during the Gramon Chess Tournament. Tom was undefeated winning the tournament with six consecutive victories in addition to the championship match. The Craig School chess team took second place in the tournament. Tom had to wait two weeks to bring home the title due to a multitude of stalemates in the other semi-final match, but when he was asked to comment, he replied, "Did you have any doubts?"

Congratulations to Tom, Coach Peter Chin, and the entire Craig upper school chess team!

Tom is shown playing chess against a classmate during a past tournament.

Sleeping bags were set up in Ms. Ranieri's classroom and the girls made crafts, watched movies, had pillow fights, painted nails, put on makeup, munched on snacks and just had fun!
Karate not only teaches discipline but also helps with balance and promotes a healthy and safe lifestyle. Karate teaches self defense through a set of principles and standard responses to a variety of scenarios. As a method of keeping fit and healthy, it develops balance, co-ordination, aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. In addition, it challenges the brain and requires constant mental alertness and agility. Students really enjoy this experience, talking about " a new sport to experience," and learning to do "flying kicks". Students are sharing their karate skills with each other in a safe and controlled environment.

There was standing room only in the auditorium as Mr. Aquino presented his latest blockbuster on Expo Night, April 3rd. The play "Spielberg, Coppola, Aquino? Craig School at the Movies" was written and directed by Mr. Aquino with Ms. Thompson listed as Assistant Director. Mr. Aquino and the performers--students in the 3rd through the 8th grades--brought down the house and all appeared to have a wonderful time doing it.
After the play, the parents visited the classrooms with their children to see firsthand all the work the students have done in the past year. The art work alone was mind-boggling. Add to that the illustrated written work, math and computers projects, science and social studies displays and the result was over 260 family members in awe.

Students raise money for the Morristown Memorial Hospital Pediatric Cardiology Department.

Craig Lower School children are presenting a check for $200.00 to the Gorayeb Children’s Pediatric Cardiology Department at Morristown Memorial Hospital on Thursday, March 27th at 11:00 AM. The money was raised in response to a “Wall of Hearts” the students created in celebration of February as heart healthy month.

The project grew out of Rachel’s Challenge, year long program promoting little acts of kindness, and was led by the “Friends of Rachel” club and Craig’s Lower School Student Council members. Two hearts were sent home to each child’s parents with a request to record kind behaviors and to donate a dollar for each heart. Teachers were also given hearts for helping their colleagues. “It’s amazing the number of little kindnesses that started cropping up among both children and faculty in response to this program,” remarked Phyllis Lakin, Craig’s School Psychologist who helped launch the program.

Carolyn Dorfman, founder and artistic director of the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company introduced children from a number of schools to several of her choreographed dance numbers. The pieces represented a cross section of her work since founding the company in 1982. After each dance, Carolyn appeared before the students to explain the work and engage the students in discussion.

The dances dramatically intertwined bodies and often incorporated props such as rotating disks with the dancers piled on top. Carolyn explained that she was the daughter of Holocaust survivors and some of her pieces were inspired by the experiences of her parents. One of the more unusual pieces was a duel in which the two actor/dancers verbally sparred, the one giving a yiddish word, the other responding with the American translation until the end when "mensch" defied translation.

Carolyn is the parent of an 8th grader at Craig this year and the school is indebted to her for giving Craig kids such a fascinating artistic experience.

Over 70 Grandfriends and relatives arrived on November 21st at 8:30 AM for breakfast at Craig before heading off to classrooms with their grandkids leading the way. Each grandfriend experienced an abbreviated schedule of classes, each approximately 20 minutes in length, as a kind of educational snapshot of the methods used by Craig teachers to address learning differences.
At 11:00 all students and their grandfriends trooped across to the Wilson auditorium for a musical presentation by two performers, Sruli & Lisa, whose interactive show, "We Are All Americans", celebrated American's diverse immigrant communities. One of the grandfathers actually was inveigled into performing a belly dance on stage. Too bad we don't have a photo of that!

Monday was “Wear Red Day” and the door of each homeroom was decorated with the theme, “Slam the Door on Drugs.” On Tuesday, all kids wore sweats to school for “Being Drug Free is No Sweat.” On Halloween Wednesday, costumes were the dress code for “Say Boo to Drugs.” Thursday’s theme was “Lei off Drugs” with all the children and faculty sporting the colorful necklaces and on Friday mismatched clothes was the dress code for “Drugs and I Don’t Mix.”

In addition to the prizes and treats given out all week (for example, pretzels at lunch to emphasize “Don’t Let Drugs Twist Your Mind”), six adolescent residents of Daytop Village, a residential drug treatment program in Mendham, NJ., came to speak to seventh and eighth grade students about their lives and drug experimentation. In an “up close and personal” manner, each resident told a cautionary tale of drug use leading to addiction, in some cases incarceration, and eventual placement by the court in the drug treatment program.

As Craig students listened to each Daytop Village resident, they heard a message of how casual drug use can escalate to drug addiction and the unraveling of lives. Residents told the students how no one ever thinks they are heading toward trouble when beginning to use drugs, about the pain they inflicted on their families, friends, and themselves, and the difficulty of stopping once involved in drug use. They discussed how peer pressure is often subtle, and that ultimately it is up to the student to make a healthy or destructive choice. Advising the students that drug use is definitely “not cool,” they strongly urged all students never to start the journey. Craig students were advised to talk to caring adults in their lives about problems and concerns, rather than turn to drugs.

The evening began with a presentation by Headmaster, David Blanchard, on how Craig's curriculum matches up with the public school. He began with a brief update on plans to relocate the high school because there is no room in the Lincoln Park facility to accommodate the growing program. David then went on to describe how Craig matches the core curriculum standards set by the state of New Jersey. He gave specific examples of course materials and reading lists and explained how special strategies enrich the curriculum without sacrificing fundamental content.
With schedules in hand and maps to guide them, the parents then followed an abbreviated version of their child's day for the remainder of the evening. Surprisingly, no parent got lost although a few might have been a tad tardy! Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable and eye-opening experience to see the Craig School teachers in action!

Rachel Joy Scott was the first student to be killed at Columbine. The program presented to Craig students was an outgrowth of the six journals her family found after her death along with the many anecdotal accounts of her kindness.
Britta Holtcamp, a friend of Dana Scott, Rachel’s sister, presented Rachel's Challenge to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Her presentation interspersed film coverage of the Columbine shootings with excerpts from Rachel’s journals and photos of Rachel with family members and friends. She offered five challenges to the students: to eliminate prejudice by looking for the best in others; to dare to dream by setting goals; to choose positive influences; to offer kind words and small acts of kindness; and to start a chain reaction with family and friends.

After the presentation, Britta met with the 8th grade “peer leaders” of the school for a training session. Again, short film clips were shown along with information about the Friends of Rachel (F.O.R.), groups of adult and student leaders who form the “chain reaction” teams promoting kindness, compassion, respect in helping to make the school and the world a better place. The Craig peer leaders will receive CDs, posters and copies of “Teen Impact” magazine to help spread the message of kindness. They were also given suggestions such as holding “Clickety-Clack Day” on the first Tuesday of each month to encourage school cliques to reach out to other students.
