In the last few weeks, I have had conversations with our school’s parents about some fundamental aspects of our school budget. For example, I shared with a parent that our annual budget requires the school to raise in voluntary gifts approximately $250,000 between our Annual Fund, the net proceeds from our Auction, and the net proceeds from our Golf Outing each June- after school has closed for the year. The fact is that without this fundraising we would need a higher tuition rate to meet our annual financial obligations to conduct the program that we need to run for your children.
It occurs to me that there are other aspects of our annual operations families may not know we need to consider. For example, we choose to schedule over 180 days of school each year, plus the 20 or so days of our highly popular (over 90 participants) Summer Academy. Most New Jersey Independent Schools have a calendar based on 170 days, the minimum number required. Second, almost every adult teaching at Craig has a dual certification- special education and their subject or level of teaching. Third, as an independent school, we must follow legislative matters designed to limit some of our special nature. We need to be vigilant to protect our independence and to be governed by our volunteer Board of Trustees.
There are other aspects of our school that might be of interest to you, so please send your questions to me. Thank you for your continued trust in The Craig School.
