The Craig School Mission Statement

The mission of The Craig School is to provide to our students a strategy-based, comprehensive, and challenging school experience that acknowledges their learning disabilities build on their aptitudes, and strengthens their self-awareness and self-esteem. We help our parents assess their child's true potential and understand the nature of learning disabilities, and provide our families an internal support network within the Craig community.

The Position

The Craig School seeks an experienced and demonstrated leader, educator, and administrator to direct the Lower and Middle School program. The incoming Director will commence work on July 1, 2022.

The Lower & Middle School Director provides leadership and supervision in the daily operations of the division, which includes grades 2 through 8, with approximately 110 students and 30 faculty members. The Director plans for and oversees the quality of learning, student services, and student outcomes while ensuring cohesive integration with school-wide policies, programs, and initiatives. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Lower & Middle School Director serves on the senior administrative team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, oversight of the division’s academic and co-curricular program; the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of faculty; and management of the division’s budget. Additionally, the Lower & Middle School Director works with the High School Director to implement curricular, teaching and learning, co-curricular, and student life program integration through all divisions of the School.

The successful candidate will have experience leading faculty, working with parents, and developing an innovative, responsive curriculum for students with language-based learning disabilities. The salary is commensurate with experience and competitive with other independent schools of a similar size.

Important Qualities and Qualifications

  • M.Ed in Special Education preferred.
  • LDTC licensure.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students with language-based learning disabilities.
  • Demonstrated academic knowledge of current and emerging evidence-based practices for students with language-based learning disabilities.
  • Significant experience and knowledge of federal and state provisions and regulations for classified students (IDEA, IEP/ISP, etc.)
  • Work Experience: Minimum of five years experience in a relevant position that includes work with children in this age group in a neuro-diverse school setting, including lead teaching, administrative and supervisory and/or mentoring experience, and student advising.
  • Equity Focus: Demonstrated capacity to bring an equity lens to all aspects of their work. Core competencies in cultural responsiveness, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are required.
  • Communication Skills: Superb written and oral communication skills that capture and effectively communicate the School’s mission to all constituencies and that enrich the school’s culture.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Superior interpersonal skills, the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, faculty, and other members of the school community in a way reflective of the school’s culture and to project professional competence, leadership capability, discretion, judgment, and personal maturity.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Proven track record as a team player in dynamic environments and among a diverse community of colleagues

Search Process

After an initial review of applicants in late December 2021, the Search Committee will contact a select group of candidates for interviews. Finalists will be invited to The Craig School for a more comprehensive series of interviews with administrators and other school constituencies. The Craig School expects to make an appointment no later than March 1, 2022. We will keep all applicants informed of their status throughout the process.
