Craig School New Jersey

HS Week of March 21st

This week is trimester exams and Parent-Teacher conference week at Craig High, starting this Wednesday through Friday.  Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Each day is a 12 PM close so a gentle reminder to your transportation might make sense.
  • Students start their school day with a morning study period and exams start at 9 AM.
  • There is a mid-morning study period and break time between their two daily scheduled exams
  • Each group has a study hall during the exam blocks so with parent permission (an email to Mrs. Maas) a student can come in late or leave early on that day

Our students did such a great job during the first trimester exams so we are feeling confident that they will do so again.

Senior Receives Scholarship from NJCEC: We are so proud to announce that senior Aidan has received a scholarship from the New Jersey Council for Exceptional Children (NJCEC)! Aidan applied for the scholarship over the winter and in addition to an application, had to submit a brief writing sample to the NJCEC scholarship committee. He will be using the funds from this scholarship to support his continuing education at Universal Technical Institute in Bloomfield, NJ and will be honored in a Zoom presentation held later this month.

NJCEC is an organization devoted to improving educational opportunities for individuals with exceptionalities and students with disabilities. According to their website, the council, along with CEC groups across the country, advocates for governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides professional development, and supports those with underserved members of the exceptionality community.  The NJCEC has over 1500 members including teachers, administrators, child study team members, paraprofessionals, families, and more. To learn more about joining the NJCEC as a family/parent affiliate member, please check out their membership options online, which also includes great articles and webinars.

High School Events

CSHS March Parent-Teacher Conferences This Week:  This Wednesday through Friday is our Spring Virtual Parent-Teacher Conferences.  By early next week,  you will receive your meeting schedule with specific times and specific zoom links to each of your teen’s teachers.

When you click on the designated Zoom Link at the designated time (or a couple of minutes early), it will bring you to the Zoom waiting room where the teacher will invite you to join the virtual meeting at your scheduled time.  Each meeting will be 10 minutes long so in order to maximize your time, you are welcome to email any specific topics that you would like to discuss directly to that specific teacher.  There will be a two-minute virtual travel time between conferences to allow you to pull up the next link.  All conferences with One on One Reading, School Counseling, and College Counseling that you requested will be in addition to your conferences and be scheduled right before or after your hour block.  We hope you found the conferences informative and unifying.  When it comes to your teen, we are truly a village!

It's time to enroll in The Craig School Summer Academy!  Please fill out the registration form to enroll your child in the full-day or half-day program. Counseling Corner-Multiple Intelligences:  The Freshman Social Dynamics class is learning all about Multiple Intelligences this month!  Based on Howard Garners’ Theory of Multiple Intelligences, there are 8 categories that we all have varying degrees of intelligence in.

Students will be learning about these categories and taking their own self-inventory next week to reveal their top areas of strength.  Students are also learning and applying the concept of Growth Mindset to understand those areas that are challenging for them but that they can still grow and improve through practice and hard work. To learn more about Howard Garner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences visit the link below:

Junior Ben Takes 3rd Overall at Grogger Gallop 5K: CSHS Junior Cross Country runner, Ben, competed in the Grogger Gallop 5K in Union NJ this past weekend.  This 5K event was a fundraiser for the YM-YWHA of Union County to raise money for scholarships to allow children to attend summer camp.  Ben placed 3rd overall in the field of almost 100 runners.  In addition, he put up an amazing average mile time of 7:50.  Well done, Ben!

Badger Hoops Intersquad High Scoring Affair:  CSHS Badgers Basketball held another intrasquad game last week and it turned into a crowd-cheering, high scoring 39-35 contest.  A lot of amazing athletics were on display and a bunch of individual career highs were set.

Junior Matt had a career-high 20 points while Sophomores Sam (12 points, 5 rebounds) and Nate (11 points, 1 rebound) kept the game close.  Junior Ben posted a career-high 8 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Sophomores Evan and Peter each scored their first High School buckets as well.

Another career high day was on display from Junior Luke E. who pulled down an amazing 20 rebounds and put up 10 points.  A strong defensive performance was also shown from Junior Captain Luke D (8 points, 9 rebounds). And if all of that wasn’t impressive enough, Junior Nicole and Sophomore Grace each came down with a career-high 4 rebounds apiece in the land of the giants.

As the temperatures begin to rise and our desire to be outside increases, consider registering to spend the day on one of the most beautiful golf courses in New Jersey while supporting your favorite school!  Registration is now open for our Annual Golf Outing which will occur on Tuesday, June 21st at Ballyowen Golf Club in Hamburg.  There are various levels of support including sponsoring a faculty member, joining us for dinner and the auction or sponsoring a tee.  Use this link to register: Craig School Golf Outing Registration and learn more about the event at  Information about how you can help with our Golf Outing Auction will be forthcoming.  Please reach out to Katie Burke, Director of Development, at if you have any questions. April LUNCH DELIVERY Program Ordering Window:  The April LUNCH DELIVERY ordering window will open starting this Friday, March 18th through next Wednesday, March 23rd.

You will notice when placing your order that there are a couple of minor price increases starting in April.  Our Chinese food vendor has instituted a modest price increase and our online vendor, My Food Days, is now charging a 99¢ service charge per total order.   This is a one-time per month charge, not a charge on each day's order.

As annual CSHS April lunch tradition dictates, we will be celebrating William Shakespeare's birthday on Friday, April 22nd with a traditional English fare, which will include fish and chips, cottage pie (think Shepard’s pie but with beef), bangers, and mash and classic British flapjacks for dessert!  If you have any questions about any of the above or our lunch delivery program in general, please reach out to Amanda Jahn at

Craig School Emergency Contact System:  The Craig School uses a multi-tiered communication system that provides to our families, the highest level of certainty that you are made aware of any change in the opening or closing status of Craig Lower Middle School and Craig High.  Our various communication tiers include:

  • Craig Notification Call System:  The Craig Notification call is a voice activated system so you need to say HELLO once and allow the system to activate.  If you say HELLO followed by another HELLO in rapid succession, the system will not activate and not start the recorded message.  If you are unable to take the call, it will leave a message.
  • School Email Blast:  We will send out an email blast to all of our families and students.  Keep in mind that emails are dependent on the internet so if that’s down, so are emails.
  • Text  Dr. Cap:  As a last resort to check school status, you can always text Dr. Cap at (973)534-9054.
