Leslie Josel - Award-Winning Author, Speaker, Coach

Late, Lost & Lagging Behind: Demystifying Executive Functions

Executive functioning skills are essential to how we learn and act. They're the brain’s ability to self-regulate, complete tasks, be time aware and remember information.  In essence, they control EVERYTHING we do! Leslie will break down the six pillars of executive functions, including time management, working memory, effort and mood regulation. She’ll highlight the importance of understanding where your student sits on the Executive Age scale, and provide insight in how we can help our students strengthen their EF muscle. Leslie will also detail specific scaffolding, strategies and systems and provide practical solutions using case studies to help support organization, time management, procrastination and focusing weaknesses.

Sign ups will be coming soon.

“BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT”

This Wednesday, September 22nd: This Wednesday, parents will have the opportunity to put a teacher face with a name/email address as well as find out a little bit about many of the courses at Craig High School.  Here is how our evening unfolds-

  • Parking:  We will be starting in the gym so parents are welcome to park anywhere near the middle side door.  You will see our official Craig High School sandwich sign as you get closer to the gym entrance!
  • 6:30-6:45PM-Arrival, Sign In, Pick-Up Class Schedules and enjoy our Senior Bake Sale (everything’s $1):  Upon your arrival, Mrs. Maas will make sure you have your schedule for the evening and guide you to our student run senior bake sale.  Our seniors will throw in a free cup of coffee or bottle of water with every Craig purchase!
  • 6:45-7:00PM-Welcome and Overview of the Evening:  Dr. Loftin, Head of School and Dr. Cap, Director of The Craig School High School will share a quick overview and field any question.
  • 7:00-8:30PM-Classroom Visits and Conversations:  Parents will be following a five-period class schedule with each class meeting for 15 minutes. Like our students, you will have a 5-minute travel time between periods.  Our student ambassadors will be stationed throughout the hallway to help guide you to your classes and let you know when it is time to move onto your next period.
  • Skipping Classes: During your classroom time, you will have the option of “skipping” a class and visiting with some of our specialists and classroom teachers who might not have made your schedule for the evening:
    • Mrs. Brown, School Counselor, Room 207
    • Ms. Blount, Reading Specialist, Room 207A
    • Mrs. Skerker, College Counselor, Room 102
    • Mr. Norton, PE/Health, in the Gym
    • Mrs. Tartaglia, Art, Room 107

CSHS STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Junior, Josh Jehu-Appiah Summer Adventure in Ghana: CSHS 11th grader, Josh Jehu-Appiah spent 6-weeks of his summer abroad in West Ghana where his father is the Director of a school.  During Josh’s time there, he volunteered at a bible school where he led twice daily puppet shows for both the students of the school and the local town children.  He shared that he added special sound effects to the bird, dog, and monkey puppets!

In addition, he also led a series of devotionals, did bible readings with the middle school students, was a lead singer at the evening church programs, and used his charisma and enthusiasm to get all of the volunteers out there dancing at the evening services.  All in all, Josh amassed over 40 community service hours but even more impressive, he left a lasting and loving impact on all of those that he encountered in his weeks abroad.  We are so proud of Josh!

CSHS FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

We are excited to welcome our new Director of College Counseling, Ms. Lindsey Skerker, to our CSHS Team. Ms. Skerker received her Master of Science in Education in School Counseling from Monmouth University, her Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University, and her College Advising Certificate from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership through Monmouth University.

Ms. Skerker was formerly the college & career counselor at the Purnell School, an all-girls boarding and day school for students with learning differences located in Pottersville, NJ.  Welcome to the CSHS Family, Ms. Skerker!

ATHLETICS

CROSS COUNTRY

Badger Cross Country Season is Here:  Badger X-Country starts up this week with our first official practice on Tuesday.  Practices will be held from 3-4:30PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays into late October.  Our cross country race schedule for the season traditionally includes two to three 5K races usually held somewhere in Morris County.  Races are on the weekends (Saturday or Sunday) starting in late September and we wrap up our final race usually in late October-early November.

Last season we were very fortunate to find and run in two live 5K races.  Races are optional but are an amazing experience.  We will register our student runners but parents will be responsible for the cost of the race ($30 per).  The cost for all races and our x-country team shirt is $75 (checks made payable to The Craig School).  Parents, siblings, friends, and relatives are welcome to register on their own and run with us!  Our race schedule will be announced during our first week of practices.  Any questions, contact CSHS Cross Country coach Ms. Crum at JCrum@craigschool.org
