Craig School New Jersey

LS/MS Week of June 14, 2021

Dear Craig Families,

We are approaching the finish line of a unique but rewarding school year. As much as I would love to be writing about creative art projects or an unusual science experiment, I must provide you with dates, times, and arrivals for next week.

Today the students will be sent home with their L.A. and Reading binders. Monday you will receive the math binders. Please put the binders in a secure spot because they are valuable learning tools and will come in handy the next school year. I can’t tell you how many former Craig students expressed how often they used their Craig resources.

Sunday night is the long awaited talent show (time to be announced later). There are over 30 acts and lots of talent. If you are unable to watch the show on Sunday, we are planning other viewings in school during the week. Certainly watching in school is nowhere near as fun as sitting together with the family and a big bowl of popcorn.

Tuesday the computers will be collected so we can service and update them over the summer. Those students attending the summer program will be holding on to their Chromebooks through summer school. Tuesday will also be the day that summer homework assignments are sent home. Some assignments will still need to be hard copy, but all assignments can also be found in your child’s Math, LA, and Reading Google Classrooms labeled summer. Correspondence will be sent asking you to look over the summer homework. Please sign and return the letters by Wednesday, June 16th, so that we know all work has been received. The beauty of Google classroom is that no one can lose their work, though it is important to have access to a printer.

Wednesday is the Annual Award Ceremony. I am looking forward to having the families back on campus even if the ceremonies are spread throughout the day. Scheduled times will continue to be posted in the dates section of the newsletter.

Thursday is our big Badger Reveal. I can’t wait! I have not been given even the smallest peek. We will start our day with yearbook signing from 8:30 - 9:00 and then the Reveal, followed by Kona Ice for all. We will then celebrate Craig Spirit Day until 12:00. Everyone will be receiving Craig Tee shirts in honor of the day. Thursday is the last school day for the 2nd through 7th graders. Only eighth graders and their families attend Friday’s Graduation ceremony.

We are so fortunate to have our graduation ceremony in-person with family and friends. This momentous event begins at 9:00. Parking will be available on campus Wednesday through Friday for all of our Special events. Please come join us. We look forward to seeing you all live.

Teaching students to differentiate between literal and inferential can be a challenging task. Mrs. Imperatore’s first period reading class is learning the difference between literal and inferential.  The class looked at a picture of the contents of a handbag.  The student’s listed what they saw.  Using the formula What I know + What I see, hear or read = My inference, the class brainstormed inferences based on what they saw in the picture.   For example, the purse contained dog treats and a picture of a dog.  The students inferred that the owner of the purse had a dog.  The next day the students looked at various pictures of shoes and had to infer who might wear the shoes in the picture.  Understanding how to make and justify inferences helps the students with critical thinking skills.
