Dear Craig Families,
You made our Teacher Appreciation Week extraordinary. We were overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness. This pandemic year has been particularly challenging and your gestures of kindness warmed our hearts and energized our spirits. Did you know that half of English words are made up of Latin Prefixes, Suffixes and Root words? Morphology is the study of these word parts and their meanings. Direct instruction in morphology can boost students’ word recognition skills, vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension and spelling. Instead of decoding a word sound by sound or breaking words into syllables, students look for familiar prefixes, suffixes and root words when they approach a new word. Breaking a word down into its parts or “chunks” is an efficient way to read longer words. While studying morphology, one adult student expressed how helpful it was for her when she said, “Recognizing the parts of a longer word helps the word just fall apart before my eyes.” The students in the pictures below are learning to quickly and easily read longer words by putting their knowledge of morphology to work.
