THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Craig Families,

You made our Teacher Appreciation Week extraordinary. We were overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness. This pandemic year has been particularly challenging and your gestures of kindness warmed our hearts and energized our spirits. If you were flies on the wall you would have heard comments like this from the staff:

  • How special to find a little something “sweet” each day in our mailboxes!
  • The cards made by the students brought tears to my eyes. Some students even sent additional emails saying “thank you” to us.
  • The amazing baked goods were delicious and having your child hand deliver them was even better.
  • The best present was having your presence. It was so nice to finally have some of the parents back on campus even if it was outdoors.
  • Where did you get that food truck! What a gift and having the picnic tables set with flower centerpieces ready for us to share lunch together meant the world.
  • How nice to be greeted Monday morning by a “We love our teachers” yard sign.
  • What a great way to end the week with happy appetizers and happy conversation - quality time with our fellow teachers.

I could go on and on commenting about our heartfelt appreciation but I believe one teacher said it best “You gave us more than a nice feeling. It was a shout from the rooftop!” We are all so grateful to be a part of this remarkable Craig School Community.

Sincerely,

Janet Cozine

Morphology

Did you know that half of English words are made up of Latin Prefixes, Suffixes and Root words?  Morphology is the study of these word parts and their meanings. Direct instruction in morphology can boost students’ word recognition skills, vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension and spelling. Instead of decoding a word sound by sound or breaking words into syllables, students look for familiar prefixes, suffixes and root words when they approach a new word. Breaking a word down into its parts or “chunks” is an efficient way to read longer words.  While studying morphology, one adult student expressed how helpful it was for her when she said,  “Recognizing the parts of a longer word helps the word just fall apart before my eyes.” The students in the pictures below are learning to quickly and easily read longer words by putting their knowledge of morphology to work.
