LS/MS Week of April 11th

THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Craig School Families,

Today was School Spirit Day and your children had fun showing off their favorite sports jerseys. What a variety we had, from football, to hockey, to basketball - high school, college, and professional. School spirit is in many ways the heart of a school and our peer leaders continue to help us foster that sense of belonging among students and staff. When it’s at its strongest, school spirit inspires active participation in school activities and events. We are hoping all of our Craig families will feel the motivation and enthusiasm to participate as we kicked off the peer leaders’ service project, Pennies for Peace next week. The very first Pennies for Peace donation came from a group of elementary school students in Wisconsin in 1995. Students collected pennies, sent them to the Central Asia Institute, and Pennies for Peace was born!

After much research using Charity Navigator as a resource, and studying the current climate, the peer leaders voted to use the concept of Pennies for Peace, but the donation of funds would go to the Ukraine, under Global Giving. This program focuses on raising cross-cultural awareness through education to promote peace around the world. Our donation to this fund will support Ukraine's current need with the focus on the most vulnerable, which includes children.  The leaders have their containers to support the donations ready, and are prepared to explain the charity effort to each homeroom Monday, April 18th. It is difficult to understand that pennies in the United States may have small worth, but in the Ukraine, just a few pennies has a great impact on the many families displaced by the war. The drive will run through the end of April, so send in your change. Together we can cultivate peace, nurture hope and change the world - one child at a time.

Sincerely,

Janet Cozine

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS

On a quest to continue to increase their expertise in the instructional methodology of Orton Gillingham, three Craig teachers, Lynn Imperatore, Karen Pompillo, and Janelle Kenny-Johnson spent the last year becoming Orton-Gilingham Certified instructors. Although all three instructors were previously Orton trained, they wanted to best serve the Craig School students with this additional certification. Research shows that one of the best ways to raise student achievement is to continue to strengthen teaching professionals' knowledge and skills in order to help students learn at the highest levels.

The three teachers embarked on a year-long, supervised practicum.  It was not only a year of additional training, on top of their already robust teaching schedules, but also marked their personal investment in student literacy and education. This practicum process entailed working 1:1 with a focus student. 45-60 lesson plans were created, executed, and were observed with the Orton Gillingham methodology. The teachers received ongoing feedback throughout their training. Additionally, these Craig teachers had to pass a final assignment, as well as take and pass the KPEERI, an exit exam that requires an 80 percent or higher in order to receive certification.  All three teachers took, and passed this exam on their first attempt. Congratulations Mrs. Imperatore, Mrs. Pompilo, and Mrs. Kenny-Johnson on you certification and thank you for your commitment to the Craig School students.

IMPORTANT INFO

Craig School Emergency Contact System:  The Craig School uses a multi-tiered communication system that provides to our families, the highest level of certainty that you are made aware of any change in the opening or closing status of Craig Lower Middle School and Craig High.  Our various communication tiers include:

  • Craig Notification Call System:  The Craig Notification call is a voice activated system so you need to say HELLO once and allow the system to activate.  If you say HELLO followed by another HELLO in rapid succession, the system will not activate and not start the recorded message.  If you are unable to take the call, it will leave a message.
  • School Email Blast:  We will send out an email blast to all of our families and students.  Keep in mind that emails are dependent on the internet so if that’s down, so are emails.

Birthdays: Please note:

We understand that some children want to share a “birthday treat” with their classmates on their special day.  If you are planning to have your child bring food items into school for sharing please abide by the following:

  • Notify your child’s homeroom teacher prior to the day so that we are aware
  • Remember we are a “nut-free’ facility and food items containing nuts, nut oils, nut butters and/or peanuts are not allowed in the school
  • Each item is to be individually wrapped/packaged and can not be distributed from a communal box or container
  • Please provide the ingredient list with the foods as several of our students have food sensitivities

Treats will be shared at snack time or homeroom (at the teacher’s discretion) and not during lunchtime or recess.  We have more than one group-and sometimes grade- together at those times and it is difficult to single out only certain children for the treat while others are present.

If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Ellen Meisenbacher at emeisenbacher@craigschool.org

Thank you for understanding.
