Dear Craig Families,
Parent/teacher conferences will be starting next week, every morning from November 1st through the 19th, Wednesday, November 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, all day Thursday, November 4th, and Friday, November 5th till 4:00 pm. You should have already received an email from Kimberly McGroarty confirming your date and time for your conference as well as your login. This year we were able to offer the option of in-person or virtual. Because of the complexity of scheduling, everyone has been given a set time.
The following subject teachers will be at the conferences, Reading, LA, Math, and Science or Social Studies. If you meet with Science in the fall, you will meet with Social Studies in the spring and visa-versa. If your child has an additional Orton pull-out that teacher will also be present. The families with an asterisk next to their names will have the case manager, Eileen Goodman from the Morris County Educational Commission at the conference as well.
The Goals and Objectives will be emailed Monday, November 1st. Since time is of the essence, while viewing your objectives think of questions you might want to ask the teachers. If you have any specific questions or topics you wish to discuss, you may want to open with those during your conference.
Parent/teacher conference is a time for parents to receive important information about their child and for teachers to hear your perspective about your child’s needs. Therefore, the most productive meeting would be without the student present. This may be a challenge with the virtual meeting and may require some creative planning. Our main goal is to explain and answer questions about your child as well as address your concerns. The parent-teacher connection truly helps the teacher-student connection.
Below are some helpful tips to consider for virtual conferencing:
The morning in-person conferences will be held in the cafeteria and the Wilson teacher’s room to provide for appropriate social distancing. Masks are required. We will need to abide by our schedules so please be prompt.
Remember, parent/teacher conferences are for you. We want you included in our conversations because you are an integral part of the equation. We look forward to meeting with you and sharing so our children can learn and grow in the best way possible.

GLOBAL TEACHER-TO-TEACHER EXCHANGE
The Craig School and GD Goenka World School located in Sohna, a city outside of New Delhi, India, gathered a small group of teachers and administrators via Zoom to exchange ideas on the shifts in education seen since the beginning of the pandemic. Topics focused on student emotional well-being in this new era of education. It was evident that even though GD Goenka and The Craig School are on opposite sides of the globe and each school’s mission is very different, so much of what we are seeing in the classroom is the same, such as the awareness of building relationships with students and families to foster learning and tuning into the social and emotional well-being of students. The two schools plan on continuing this exchange throughout the school year through facilitated dialogue and teacher training opportunities.

Badger Boutique (School Store) News
We are pleased to announce the 2021/2022 Grand Opening for the Badger Boutique. Our students have been working so hard at going above and beyond not only in the classroom but amongst their peers as well. We have noticed a great deal of kindness, honesty, teamwork, and support daily which does not go unnoticed. Our students earn “Badger Token’s” for being a star student and displaying these types of attributes daily. The “Badger Token’s” are held in the students' “Badger Wallet” in either homeroom or in the student’s binder. On Tuesday November 2, 2021 we will hold our first “shopping day” for students during recess. The students will come to the physical store with their “Badger Wallet” and shop with the “Badger Token’s” they have earned. Our store has snack items, plushies, squishies, pop it’s, fidgets, gift cards and more. This is always a fun day for the students. We cannot wait to see everyone’s items.

School-wide Art Project for Spring:
We will be continuing our bottle cap collections for our mosaic mural in the springtime. All sizes, colors and materials welcome. The students can bring them in bags or small boxes.
Many people can look back to a time in their life when they first started reading, That memory might include a well-meaning person standing next to you, pointing to the words and encouraging you to “sound it out” Here at The Craig School, Our Orton Gillingham teachers encourage our readers by guiding with prompting and cueing based on the concepts their students have mastered or are learning. But what happens when a student faces a word that they cannot sound out, how does a student learn to read a sight word, or what we often refer to as a “red word”?
Often, educators may refer to a red word as a “high frequency or a sight word”(IMSE, 2021). These words are irregular and can not be sounded out, instead, they are stored in our orthographic lexicon, or the storage system found in the brain which consists of individual word spellings. Red words are not always words that are irregular, for some learners, red words will include words that contain concepts the learner has not yet learned or mastered.
Teachers here at The Craig school can often be found teaching a red word by acknowledging and emphasizing the irregularity of the word. The teacher asks the student what sounds he or she is hearing, and then we share how the word is actually spelled, It becomes quite clear on a word like “above” which sounds like /u/b/u/v why the word is included in the red word list.
Orton-Gillingham is a direct and systematic approach to teaching reading that utilizes multi-sensory strategies and teaching a red word is no different. Students use a red crayon, lined paper, and a bumpy screen to write the red word. After the word is written correctly, the students use one finger to trace the letters, saying them out loud while feeling the bumps, and saying the word. Students then stand, hold their paper in front of them with their non-dominant hand while using their other hand to tap out the letters of the new red word on their arm three times. After this practice, the students place the screen over the written letters and trace again three times with their fingers. All of this practice allows a student to flip over the sheet and re-write the word they have started pushing to their memory.
Two to three red words are taught each week with a daily review of these words will allow these irregular words to end up committed to the memory of the student. There are many activities that a child can participate in both at school and at home to make red word practice fun. Practicing red words can be fun. Ask your child’s teacher for games and activities they can suggest to help your child practice his or her red words at home!

We understand that some children want to share a “birthday treat” with their classmates on their special day. If you are planning to have your child bring food items into school for sharing please abide by the following:
Treats will be shared at snack time or homeroom (at the teacher’s discretion) and not during lunchtime or recess. We have more than one group-and sometimes grade- together at those times and it is difficult to single out only certain children for the treat while others are present.
