NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Craig School Families,

I have always loved the energy of Back to School Night, with all our families, teachers, and staff together to open the year. The evening welcomes all the families into the school, gives everyone a chance to meet the teachers, learn about the class expectations, and get a general sense of their child's day. This year, due to COVID and our growing population of Craig families, we will make the best of the situation by hosting the event virtually. Although we cannot make Back to School Night in person, I urge you to make the most of the smaller in-person gatherings we will have, such as the monthly morning information sessions at drop-off. Future weekly newsletters will let you know when they are scheduled.

We will host Back to School Night Thursday evening, October 7th from 6:30-8:30. Your child's homeroom teacher will be emailing an individualized schedule to you on Tuesday, October 5th. If you don't see the schedule, please check your Spam folder and if it is not there, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher. You will need to have the schedule you receive open on your device for the duration of the evening as it contains the links you will need to join the teacher presentations. 

Each teacher has one link for the entire evening, so in a sense, when you join the Meet, you are entering their "classroom,” as such, you may find that another grade level is just finishing up or someone comes in late. These are things that happen when we are in person for Back to School Night and may happen in the virtual world as well. We ask that you, as always, have patience with yourself, each other, and our teachers. We are looking forward to an informative community event.

Please remember that this is a time to get a general sense of the class, the teacher, and the expectations, not a time for individual conferences. Along with these traditional protocols, we also ask for a few virtual protocols that we are all getting too used to: 

  • Please check the links ahead of time to know that you can access the schedule and the Meets from the device you choose to use.
  • Please mute your microphone, but share your camera if possible before entering the Meet.
  • Please keep this event between teachers and parents or guardians by not having your children join in.
  • Please feel free to ask general classroom questions at the end of the teacher's presentation. 

As a parent there were always a few pieces of information I wanted to walk away from each classroom session with:

  • How often will they get homework? How much time should they spend on homework each night?
  • Will they have quizzes, tests, or at home projects? How much notice will they get? Will they get a study guide?
  • How will I know how they are doing in class?
  • What is the best way to contact the teacher?

In addition to meeting the teachers and getting a sense of the classes, Back to School Night typically gives you a chance to hear about the state of the school from the Head of School, hear about highlights for the year from the Director of the Lower Middle School, and if you child receives speech and language, you can meet their therapist. This year we have added these opportunities to the evening. Please look for these Meet and Greet links on your individualized schedule. 

Please mark Thursday, October 7th on your evening calendar; it is sure to be an important link for you and your child for the 2021-2022 school year!

Late, Lost & Lagging Behind: Demystifying Executive Functions

Executive functioning skills are essential to how we learn and act. They're the brain’s ability to self-regulate, complete tasks, be time aware and remember information.  In essence, they control EVERYTHING we do! Leslie will break down the six pillars of executive functions, including time management, working memory, effort and mood regulation. She’ll highlight the importance of understanding where your student sits on the Executive Age scale, and provide insight in how we can help our students strengthen their EF muscle. Leslie will also detail specific scaffolding, strategies and systems and provide practical solutions using case studies to help support organization, time management, procrastination and focusing weaknesses

Test of The Craig School Emergency Phone Outreach System

Wednesday evening, October 6th we will be testing our school's Parent Outreach communication system that we use for school closings and school wide messages.  If you do not get that call, please email Mrs. Mary Calvano (mcalvano@craigschool.org) Thursday morning with the phone number that you should have received the call on and we will check our system.

 

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

The Craig School has been collecting Box Tops for Education since 2014 and as a school community, we have received almost $5000!  All of this from just cutting out those little “pink and blue squares” that say BOX TOP FOR EDUCATION on so many of the products we use on a regular basis.  Now due to COVID and the advancement of technology, there is no cutting out.  Now we download an app and scan!   

 

The program has changed, but the money the school could potentially earn stays the same.  To get started, visit the BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION website at https://www.boxtops4education.com/  In the top right corner, you will see JOIN FREE.  Click on that, enter CRAIG SCHOOL, click on the one in NJ, and then set up your account.  When you purchase participating products, simply scan your store receipt within 14 days of purchase.  The app will identify Box Tops products on your receipt and automatically credit the school’s earnings online.    If you have any questions about the program, feel free to email Mrs. Maas, CSHS Administrative Assistant, at DMaas@craigschool.org or call at 973-334-1234 Ext. 300

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS
This week, students in grades 2-8 completed the Group Mathematics Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation (GMADE). The GMADE is a diagnostic mathematics test that measures individual student math skills such as Number Sense, Number Properties and Operations, Measurement, Geometry, Probability, Patterns, and Spatial Sense. The GMADE results help our teachers pinpoint areas where students need direct instruction and are used for growth monitoring, strengths and areas for improvement, and student placement. Throughout this assessment, students are allowed to use reference sheets to assist them, and all questions are read aloud by the teacher. The math department is very proud of how hard all students have been working and we are eager to see results!

ATHLETICS

Hello Badgers!

Soccer is off and running. We are so excited to say that, currently we have close to 40 students participating.  As far as our schedule will go, we will maintain Wednesdays and Fridays for now. We hope to add games against other schools during the month of October. There is a good chance that our students  will be divided into two teams. More information to come.

Quick Soccer Facts:

  • Please have your Badger bring a refillable water bottle
  • If it rains or the field is muddy we will not have soccer
  • Soccer ends at 4:45, we will do our best to return by that time

  • Lunch orders are placed weekly, not monthly, and can be canceled up until 6:00 am on the day of service in the event your child is out sick. (See the Frequently Asked Question tab for detailed information and instructions)
