Group activities causing stress?
When we reach this time of Winter, it is time to think about the school calendar going into the Spring weeks. At School, we accelerate the projects and the events for students and faculty to participate in weekly. There are sound academic reasons for this including that students have worked on a variety of skills and in the last couple of months of the year it is time to “pull it all together”. I have wondered if this time of year creates increased stress for some students, when the intent is really to have the group projects turn into a celebration. An example of the group project approach is what we do over the next month or so to help our students get ready for Family STEM Night in March. My hope is that students are not getting stressed over the cooperative activities. If our students are, I hope they express that anxiety to their teachers so that teachers can help the students manage what we hope for our students is a time when they begin to look back on what they have accomplished in the first six months of the school year. As a parent, if you feel your youngster is not comfortable speaking up about how the group projects affect them negatively, then please help them with how who they can talk with their teachers.
