THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Message from the Director

(LAST CHIL OF 2025!)

This past week, we had a couple of very special guests join us at Craig High.  One was our entire Craig 8th-grade class, and the other was graphic novelist Mat Heagarty.  All of our guests played a part in our December Guest Student Speaker Series.

Mr. Mat Heagerty is a professional graphic novelist known for such works as Lumberjackula, Martian Ghost Centaur, and Unplugged & Unpopular.  He is based out of Vermont, and when he is not writing or attending comic-cons, he is visiting schools around the country, sharing his positive message of turning learning disabilities into superpowers and building resilience.

These messages were prevalent throughout his presentation to our students, where he walked through his career trajectory, the process of creating a graphic novel, and the various specialists that it requires, from character development to actual publication.  He also guided our students in a group collaboration to create our own comic book characters and story.

Our group tales had a ninja French fry guy with potato chip ninja stars and a sad hamburger side-kick named Arnold that worked at Subway. Their goal was to bring back the $5 footlong and to get people to eat fewer burgers!

In addition to our guest speaker, our students were treated to a full donut and hot chocolate bar and the largest game of musical chairs in Craig School history.  Big thank you to our Director of College Counseling and Transition, Dr. Skerker, for pulling this all together, and the combined efforts of our Craig Middle School Teachers and CHS teachers for making this day a fun and exciting community event.
