The Lower/Middle School Summer Academy

Summer Academy provides an opportunity for Craig students and non-Craig Students with learning disabilities to continue to improve their organization, note-taking, and study skills in a safe, academic environment. Hands-on experience, creative expression, and co-operative learning.

The morning Academic Session is focused on academics, reinforcing skills and strategies.

The afternoon Enrichment Session is focused on social skills, art projects, environmental sessions and community field trips.

ACADEMIC MORNING SESSION

At the Craig School Summer Academy, the academic needs of the students are determined, and then an educational program is prescribed for each child. The focal point of a student’s instruction can range from learning more decoding skills, reinforcing skills learned during the school year, or preparing students for High School.

ENRICHMENT AFTERNOON SESSION

Following a morning of academics, students have the opportunity to stay for an afternoon enrichment session.

Groups can participate in movie making, art, swim and sports. We enjoy a variety of outdoor activities and travel for field trips.

Summer Academy, grades 2-12 - July 10th - August 3rd

Summer Enrichment program, grades 2-8 - July 10th - August 4th

SUMMER ACADEMY COURSES ARE:

  • Reading:
The Reading programs are rooted in the multisensory principles of instruction. The teaching is diagnostic, prescriptive, explicit and cumulative. The students are taught concepts in a structured, sequential manner that appeals to their logic. Orton-Gillingham Project Read and Lindamood Bell Programs are some of the multisensory reading programs that will be utilized in summer school.
  • Math:
The program will be using a combination of multimedia lessons and multisensory math activities that are designed to build a solid math foundation. Students will reinforce previously learned concepts to ensure they don’t forget the critical skills that they have already learned during the school year. Reference sheets will be provided.
  • Language Arts:
The writing program will incorporate Project Read Written Expression for sentence structure and paragraph writing. This strategy-based instruction will infuse assistive technology into the writing process. Students will learn to use Mindomo as a graphic organizer to thoughtfully arrange their thoughts and ideas. Google Chrome extensions such as Read and Write and Grammarly will also be utilized.
  • Technology:
The technology/computer class offers a collection of technology projects and activities which will also reinforce the assistive technology programs used in the Language Arts classes. Lessons are geared toward the grade level of the student.

*Individual progress reports will be provided the last day of summer program for Reading, LA and Math.
