High School Newsletter - April 28th

THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Message from the Director

It was great to see our school community back from Spring Break, safe, sound, recharged, and ready to roll.  Speaking of rolling, we are rolling out our next series of Afterschool ART WORKSHOPS and GOLF CLINICS.  Also, we have our first TEACHER FEATURE happening next week (Dodgeball in Mt. Lakes).  There is still time for your teens to get in on all of them, including the May Teacher Features(Cat Cafe and Kayaking).

Next Saturday, May 3rd, is our Craig School Community Drive-In, which will be held on our CHS Campus. Arrival is between 6-7PM and we will have a full cash concession stand run by our Class of 2025 to raise money for the Senior Trip to Hershey.  Info on Afterschool Art and Golf, Drive In, and Teacher Features are all in this week's CHIL.

Enjoy the wrap up to April and their potential flower payoff in May,

Dr. Cap

COMMUNITY NEWS

Earth Day at CHS 2025: This past Tuesday, CHS joined schools around the world to celebrate Earth Day with our annual CHS Earth Day Campus Clean Up.  In addition to beautifying our campus, our students earned a $600 Clean Community grant through the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority's “Keep Morris County Litter Free” program. The grant will be used to further enhance our school recycling program.  Armed with reach grabbers, gloves, trash bags, and words of encouragement from Mr. Norton, our students covered our two-acre campus from top to bottom, removing anything that was not green and growing!

Our students competed in three Earth Day categories: Earth Day Volume, Earth Day Quality, and Earth Day Strangeness.  This year’s Volume winners were Jada, Jacob, and Charlie with 13.0 lbs.  For quality, our hardest working and willing to pick up the small stuff winners were Vito, Asher, and Mario.  And in our Strangeness Category, our winners were Peyton (unidentified bones), Alex and Mike B (can of gasoline). All in all, we removed almost 47 lbs of garbage and recycling in the areas surrounding our campus, which is a school record!

REMINDER-Craig School Annual Drive-In Returns to Montville, Saturday, May 3rd:  On Saturday, May 3rd, marks the return of the Annual Craig School Drive-In, where we will be hosting a Saturday Night viewing of the computer-animated adventure comedy......THE GARFIELD MOVIE in our vast CHS parking lot!

The movie and parking are free, but we will also have a full cash concession snack stand run by the CHS Class of 2025 as a fundraiser for their upcoming Senior Adventures to Hershey Park.  Popcorn, Hot Pretzels, Hamburgers, and Hot Dogs will all be available for purchase.  Arrival will be between 6-7 PM, with movie time closer to 7:30 PM.

CHS April Yum Snack Box-Columbia: This month, the CHS Yum snack crew headed to the rainiest country in the world (129.6 inches a year), the land of emeralds, and home of Juan Valdez Coffee.  We snacked on the delicacies of Colombia, where we enjoyed LA NINA TOCINETAS LIMON (Bacon and Lime Chips), YUPI RIZADAS MAYONESA (Mayonnaise Chips), and CASTIPAN GATEAU AU CAFE (Coffee Cake).

The Coffee Cake received an enthusiastic Yums Up while the rest of box received two Blahs down.

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS

CHS MATH PROGRAM-The Answer to “Where Will I Use Trigonometry?” During Geometry Class, our 10th graders put some newfound Trigonometry knowledge to the test and figured out the height of the CHS Parking Lot Flagpole using shadow measurements and angle elevation of the sun.  Our student mathematicians measured the length of the flagpole shadow (23 meters) and, using an inclinometer, measured the Angle of elevation of the Sun to be 35 degrees.

Using the Tangent Trigonometric ratio, they calculated the height of the flagpole to be 16.1 meters, or in other words, 53 feet.  If you even have a need for shadow measurements, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Simpson and his Trig Crew and mention the CHIL for a 10% discount!

ATHLETICS

Afterschool Golf Clinics WEEK One: Week 1 of our Afterschool Golf Clinics are in the books, and all of our golfers upped their game just a bit.  Coach Jada walked through parts of the club, club selection, and purpose, and offered individual insights into stance and swing.  We started in the gym and then made our way out to the largest grass area on campus that we could find.

We wrapped up our day chipping, driving, and rolling!  Next week, we will unveil the par 2 CHS Golf course and put our skills to the test.

Advancement

THE CRAIG GOLF EVENT NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Here are 2 ways you can help.

First, our online auction will run alongside the outing, and we need your help to make it a success! Thanks to our generous Craig families, we’re bringing back the Amazon Wish List for easy item donations. Simply select an item, and it will be shipped directly to Craig School to be bundled into auction packages. All items must arrive by May 21st.

How You Can Help the Auction:

  • Golf Club Connections – If you’re a golf club member or know someone who is, a golf foursome donation or a member and a threesome would be a sought-after auction item.
  • Auction Donations – Have season tickets, a vacation home, or access to unique experiences? Consider donating them! Gift cards are also great additions.
  • Monetary Contributions – Cash donations are welcome! Make checks payable to The Craig School and drop them off at the Blue House.

Every contribution - big or small - helps make this event successful. Thank you for supporting Craig’s largest fundraiser!

For questions, contact: Amanda Jahn (ajahn@craigschool.org), or Mary Calvano (mcalvano@craigschool.org)

The second way to help - attend the outing and/or dinner.  Details are:
