THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Message from the Director

Let us be one of the last to welcome you to 2026!  We hope you had an amazing holiday break and a wonderful start to the New Year.  Before we immerse ourselves in 2026, we need to officially close out 2025 and share a few things that led us into our December holiday break.  Below you will find the results of our December Spirit Day and a video of our CHS “Cereal Domino” Collection.  All of these community events were spectacular and brimming with Craig School Spirit!

And just a reminder that our afterschool winter programs get off the ground next week.  We have ESPORTS on Monday, Hoops on Tuesday, and Bowling on Thursday.  Not a bad way to start off the New Year!

Here is to a great 2026,

Dr. Cap

EVENTS

CHS Cereal Domino Collection 2025: In a joint venture between our National Honor Society and our National Art Honor Society (and a cool idea from a school in Michigan), Craig High launched our very own “CEREAL DOMINO COLLECTION” right before the New Year.

We want to thank all of the members of the Craig Community who contributed to our Cereal DOMINO line.  Believe it or not, we collected *67* boxes of cereal (the magic number/word of the year!), which we donated to our local food pantry after all of our 6-7 student celebrations wound down.

But before we boxed them up, we lined them up and set off a chain reaction down the hallways of CHS that conveyed the message that one simple act of kindness can set off a powerful chain reaction of support and impact for so many others.

CHS Winter Spirit Day 2025 RESULTS:  Our CHS 2025 Winter Spirit Day is in the books, and it was a record breaker! We had more alums join us this year than ever.  Our Spirit Day began with our event sign-ups, followed by our PACS-sponsored breakfast, which consisted of all of the carbs and vitamin C that our participants would need!  There were bagels,  muffins, cookies, OJ, and Hot Chocolate.  Big thank you to our CHS PACS reps, Mrs. Tyler, Mrs. Galatt, and Mrs. Martinez, for making our breakfast extra special.

Our first event up was Flip Flap Flow, a one-on-one tournament where the goal is to flip cups, get them to land face down, and then place them on our tic-tac-toe board and get three across before their opponent does.  Class of 2023 alum, Luke, reclaimed his title from years past, while Sophomore, Vito, laid the groundwork for a future championship.

The Bottle Flip Challenge was another one-on-one tourney where the flipper had to navigate four bottles of various sizes, ranging from the mini 4oz to the 2-liter, to land each straight up!  Alum Brady from the CHS Class of 2023 captured the glory that had alluded him in years past, but future Alum and current senior, Sivert, gave him a run for his money.

Next up was the SNOW FLAKE Stomp Rocket Launch, courtesy of Ms. Steinel,

where teams of two would divide up into the roles of launcher and catcher.

The launcher was equipped with an air stomper and 10 snowflake rockets, and the catcher with a 5-gallon bucket.

When it was all said and launched, we ended in a draw due to an equipment malfunction

(the stompers were stomped out) and the team of sophomore Mike B and freshman Calaen shared the title with 9th graders Jaiden and Elijah.

Our final team event was our Annual Cornhole Tourney, which attracts teachers, students, and alumni.

Teams of two battled it out, including many former tourney champs, but when the last bean bag was tossed, Senior Sivert and Junior Max claimed this year's title.

Next was a quick DONUT INTERMEZZO, followed by a Door Decorating Walkthrough to crown our

door decorating champs. Ms. Crum and her COACH team defended their door title with their

rendition of “The House of Ginger” (center door). “Club Santa” and “Cheer is in Bloom”

rounded out the top three door vote getters.

Our Spirit Day events wrapped up with a very cool holiday art project led by Ms. Steinel,

while Mr. Norton led the largest CHS Dodgeball game in school

Lots of Spirit, a lot of fun to close out 2025.  We look forward to our next Spirit Day in the Spring.

ALUMNI EVENTS

TRANSITION PROGRAM

Alumni Spotlight - CHS Class of 2024, Peter Returns to NJ: Craig Middle School and CHS Class of 2024 alum, Peter, paid a visit to CHS on his break from Lynn University. Peter spoke with Dr. Skerker's 11th Grade Postsecondary Strategies seminar class and shared that he started his college career at Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida, but last year transferred to Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida to pursue a degree in Cybersecurity.

Lynn is a private university with over 3,500 students.  Popular majors at Lynn include Business & Management, Psychology, Aeronautics, Communication & Design, Hospitality, and the performing arts.  Peter talked about the process of transferring schools and how Lynn’s block schedule approach works well for his learning style. He also shared that he utilizes the LD support services available through Lynn’s Institute for Achievement & Learning and meets with an academic coach weekly.  It was so great to see Peter, and we appreciate all of his college insights.

IMPORTANT INFO

CHS Takes a Live Virtual Tour of Cadiz, Spain: Last week, our 11th and 12th-grade Foreign Language classes were treated to a virtual live tour of the oldest city in Europe, courtesy of Mr. Furlong and Liz from GOGI ABROAD.  Cadiz is a coastal port city located in southwest Spain that, on a clear day, has a direct view of Morocco in North Africa.

Our students were greeted by Liz and two of her peers, who led them on a live walking tour of the cobblestone streets of Cadiz.  It was 8:30 AM here, which made it 1:30 PM there, and is prime “siesta” time in Spain, so the streets were a little empty.  In addition, the locals were getting ready to celebrate the Three Kings, which marks the official end of Christmas there.

We visited the outside of the Cadiz Cathedral, which was built in the 18th century, and explored the various plazas surrounding it.  We then made our way to El Palmar, a surfing beach of golden sand surrounded by fortified walls.  We also discussed the food of Spain, Flamenco lessons, and the international schooling system located there.  It was a Muy buen tour!
