HS Newsletter - March 17th

THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Message from the Head Of School
NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hope you have all adjusted to our daylight savings change.  The sun we miss in the morning, we get to enjoy into the early evening so it's not a bad trade-off!  This week we have a lot happening at CHS.

Our April lunch ordering window opens this FRIDAY.  We also have three guest colleges visiting our campus to meet with students this week (Landmark College, Mitchell College, and Lynn University).  This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about different college programs and the various supports they offer.

Also this week, we have 2nd-trimester report cards being posted on Tuesday (Craig Parent Portal) and our Craig Zoom Speaker Series on Wednesday evening with Rebecca Whittaker Matte sharing how to interpret common assessment tools and educational reports (Register Here).  Thinking that's plenty for one week!

Have a great weekend,

Dr. Cap

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS

March GUEST COLLEGE VISITORS SERIES-Landmark College, Mitchell College, and Lynn University: This month we have a few colleges swinging by CHS to meet with our students.  Our first three Guests stopping in this week are LANDMARK COLLEGE, MITCHELL COLLEGE (Connecticut), and LYNN UNIVERSITY (Florida).  All students are welcome to join us by RSVPing to Dr. Skerker.

THIS Tuesday, March 18th during Morning Break (for all students) & Period 4 (for Juniors) -- Landmark College in Putney, VT will be back to join us this spring (some may remember their visit from this past fall!). Landmark is a college designed exclusively for students who learn differently, including students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or executive functioning challenges. Landmark uses a strengths-based model to give students the skills and strategies they need to succeed in life. Landmark has a 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

They offer majors in anthropology, business, education, psychology, the arts, and physical education. Students enjoy participating in clubs and athletics, and many participate in internships through Career Connections. Landmark also has pre-college summer programs for current HS students and recent graduates on their campus in Vermont and online. Take a look at their summer offerings to learn more!

THIS Tuesday, March 18th -- Mitchell College in New London, CT offers associate’s and bachelor's degree programs in various majors, including business, communications, marine & environmental studies, human development & family studies, psychology, criminal justice, and exercise science.

Many students work with the Bentsen Learning Center, which offers comprehensive support services to assist with the transition to college academics. Additionally, first-year students can participate in the SAILS Program to build social connections. Mitchell also offers a Gap Year program on campus called Thames Academy to help students become more comfortable with living independently away from home while building executive functioning skills. Thames students also take a few introductory courses while building their skills. One of our recent alums from the Class of 2023 (Caroline Davis) is a current Mitchell student majoring in Early Childhood Education.

THIS Wednesday, March 19th -- Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL will join us and share all about their modern, state-of-the-art campus. They have an award-winning iPad program as an Apple partner school and offer a variety of academic programs like aviation, sports management, hospitality, international business, and entrepreneurship.

Lynn students work with learning specialists from the Institute for Achievement and Learning (IAL) Center, which provides comprehensive academic support services for students with LDs. Lynn is home to over 3000 students and is part of NCAA Division II athletics. One of our recent alums from the Class of 2024 (Peter Olinto) is now a current student at Lynn.

ATHLETICS

Volleyball Afterschool Scrimmages-TUES March 25th and TUES April 1st: A few months back, we did an outreach on putting together some afterschool volleyball clinics.  We had some interest but were unable to get enough players to make it work. In steps Mr. Furlong!  Our Craig Middle School has extended an invite to CHS to join them for some afterschool volleyball scrimmages on TUES March 25th and TUES April 1st.

We will get our players over to Mt. Lakes and pick up will be at the Reeth-Furlong Gym at 4:15PM.  Any interested volleyball players should see Dr. Cap.
