Craig High School Newsletter- Week of March 31st
Craig High School joined schools and fellow mathematicians from around the world to celebrate Pi Day this past March 14 (3/14). Our celebration started with sharing the coolest Pi facts we could find, including examples of Pi in Nature (the pupil of the eye, the sun, ripples in water), that Pi is used to test computers like a digital cardiogram, and that Pi Day is Albert Einstein’s actual birthday.
Next, we broke out the actual Pies, ranging from apple to cherry to blueberry (not a lot of takers on that one), and our CHS student mathematicians earned their slice by either reciting Pi to the 9th place and beyond or telling a Pi Joke. The Pi Joke of the day was “Why did the pie have to go to the doctor? IT WAS FEELING “CRUM-MY”! That Joke from 9th grader Alex worked on two math levels and earned him two slices! The record for reciting Pi this year was out to the 29th place by 12th grader Jada, a CHS record that we think will stand for a while (she did it twice!).
On that note, we officially close out March. Have a great start to your April,
Dr. Cap

CHS Junior Sivert One Step Closer to Private Pilot License: We are so proud to share that CHS Junior, Sivert, just recently passed his FAA test which is also known as the Airmen Knowledge Test. This is the first step in obtaining his private pilot license. The FAA knowledge exam test covers regulations, weather understanding, navigation, systems, and procedures. And although the test is 60 questions, it is randomly pulled from a database of over 1500 questions, all of which Sivert needed to be ready for.
Sivert’s path to this point is just as impressive and inspirational as the outcome of his FAA test. He began building and flying remote control planes with his Grandpa. This is where he developed his interest in flying. Next, when he turned 15, he began flying lessons at the Morristown Airport. He did this 2X a week for a full year. Then at 16, he passed the FAA test. What's next? At 17, he will do a “Check Ride,” which is a flight test conducted by a pilot examiner from the FAA who will assess Sivert’s pilot proficiencies through a two-hour oral exam and 2-3 hours in the air. During the test flight, the examiner will be looking for safety protocols and emergency responses, understanding of all aspects of the plane and instruments, communication with air traffic, and actual cross-country flying. According to Sivert, the “Check Ride” will be the easy part. What began as building model planes with Grandpa, has turned into flying single-engine, 4-seater Cessnas. We have reserved a special spot for Sivert to park his Cessna in the CHS lot if he decides to fly to school his senior year!
CHS Schoolwide Trip to Caldwell University, Friday, April 4th: Our Badgers are heading out on a college road trip to see Caldwell University next week on Friday, April 4th! All students are encouraged to attend as part of our Craig High School college & career program. The university is located nearby in Caldwell, NJ (about 20 minutes away from CHS). Caldwell is home to 1600 students and features a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. Caldwell U offers over 30 undergraduate degrees, and its most popular programs include business, psychology, and education. On campus, they offer the SOAR Services program for students with learning differences. Through SOAR, students receive academic coaching services to improve their note-taking, study skills, and executive functioning.
Caldwell is located 20 miles outside of New York City, and it is considered one of New Jersey’s best college towns with nearby shops, coffee houses, restaurants, and a movie theater. We will also be enjoying lunch on campus during our visit to try out the Caldwell dining hall food!
March GUEST COLLEGE VISITORS SERIES-Universal Technical Institute (UTI), Bloomfield, NJ: Universal Technology Institute (UTI) will round out our March College Visitors Series and join us to share all of their great hands-on programs. UTI has campuses across the country, including Bloomfield NJ, where graduates can enter the tech field working with cars, trucks, motorcycles, and boats. One of our CHS Class of 2022 alums (Armando) is now a recent UTI graduate! He completed the auto and diesel technology training program. UTI readies students for a fast-paced career with its 18 or 24-month programs. They help connect students to immediate job placements at local dealerships and collision repair companies. UTI also features great programs for students interested in HVACR and Welding.

CHS Science Labs-Eerie Glow Coming From Room 201: Who doesn’t love a good light show? In a recent Mr. Simpson’s science class lab, combustion reactions were the topic of the week. Combustion reactions occur when any substance burns in oxygen. In this case, the experiment involved an alkali metal. Potassium burns the brightest, producing a lilac flame. Sodium, which is Mr. Simpson’s alkali metal of choice, is a close 2nd with a bright orange and yellow burn. Our students were able to observe what happens when sodium is mixed with pure oxygen, noting the speed of the reaction, the intense colors, and what product was left after the reaction was over.
This lab is our students' lead into writing balanced chemical reactions, so there is a method to Mr. Simpson’s explosive labs that our kids thoroughly enjoy!
