High School Week of January 1st

THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Message from the Head Of School

Dear Families,

You talked and we listened!

Last year the Craig School considered moving our high school to the Mountain Lakes campus. The exploratory team asked questions and listened closely to teachers, parents, students, and neighbors.

We wanted to get it right.

The result is that we will strengthen and grow our high school right where it is. Turns out the Montville campus is the perfect place to steward our small nurturing high school into the very best educational experience available.  Craig High at Montville provides our students with a comprehensive high school experience while the independent environment encourages self-advocacy and independence.  Its physical size means we can provide intentional, thoughtful growth,  giving our students a safe and slightly bigger peer group with more opportunities for collaboration and experiential learning.

Meanwhile, you may see signs of construction at Henderson Hall. We are rattling around and getting ready! My team and I are once again posing questions to our community, to parents, teachers, students, and alums about how to make The Craig School the most outstanding school for students who learn differently in the New Jersey Metro area. We are already recognized as one of the top schools in the industry for literacy and language expression, and we plan to be known for our exceptional STEAM program as well. Our approach will continue to center not only on facts and skills but also on fostering a love for learning in every child.

Stay tuned because there’s always something happening at Craig!

Warmly,

Susan Schmitt

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

CHS  Parents,

You received a recent email from the Craig School Director of Technology, Mr. John Chismar, sharing Veracross, an online learning management system that we will be using at Craig High.  Many of you may have heard of or experienced various learning systems used by other schools.  Some of the more recognizable are Real-Time and Blackboard.   We have adopted Veracross, a system used by the majority of Independent Schools, due to its comprehensiveness, flexibility, and ability to sync with Google Classroom, the predominant learning platform that we use at Craig High.

The process has been a gradual one that began in the early fall when we started using the system for taking daily attendance as well as some school-based communications including the weekly Student Badger Report.  Our next phase involves using it to provide access to you, our parents, for Report Cards which leads us to where we are right now.

We will be sharing your teen’s 1st-trimester Report Cards through Veracross.  In order to view them, you will each be setting up your own Veracross Parent Account.  Instructions on how to set up your account will be sent out this week from Mr. Chismar who will guide you through the simple steps on how to pull this off.  It will be as easy as popping in your email and setting up your password.  Once your account is set, you will have access to the 1st-trimester report card for your teen this weekend.  There will be no hard copies sent.  We think you are going to appreciate being able to access report cards now and our 2nd-trimester progress reports in mid-February as well, all at the click of a button!

Enjoy your holiday break and we will see you in the New Year,

Dr. Cap
