THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Message from the Head Of School

Dear Families,

You talked and we listened!

Last year the Craig School considered moving our high school to the Mountain Lakes campus. The exploratory team asked questions and listened closely to teachers, parents, students, and neighbors.

We wanted to get it right.

The result is that we will strengthen and grow our high school right where it is. Turns out the Montville campus is the perfect place to steward our small nurturing high school into the very best educational experience available.  Craig High at Montville provides our students with a comprehensive high school experience while the independent environment encourages self-advocacy and independence.  Its physical size means we can provide intentional, thoughtful growth,  giving our students a safe and slightly bigger peer group with more opportunities for collaboration and experiential learning.

Meanwhile, you may see signs of construction at Henderson Hall. We are rattling around and getting ready! My team and I are once again posing questions to our community, to parents, teachers, students, and alums about how to make The Craig School the most outstanding school for students who learn differently in the New Jersey Metro area. We are already recognized as one of the top schools in the industry for literacy and language expression, and we plan to be known for our exceptional STEAM program as well. Our approach will continue to center not only on facts and skills but also on fostering a love for learning in every child.

Stay tuned because there’s always something happening at Craig!

Warmly,

Susan Schmitt

NOTES FROM DIRECTOR

Dear Craig School Families,

Today you will get an email from records@craigschool.org and an email from jchismar@craigschool.org. The email from records@craigschool.org will contain your child's Goals & Objectives. The email from jchismar@craigschool.org will tell you how to log into Veracross to access your child’s report card.

The Goals & Objectives are the individual skills the students are working on in each class. These will be filled out three times a year, at the same time as the report cards. Some skills will have an NI, meaning Not Introduced, meaning they are skills that are forthcoming this year. Similarly, it is not unusual to see 1’s and 2’s on the Goals & Objectives at this point in the year. Although a skill may have been introduced, it will take time during the year to develop. The progress reports for any related services your child has will be included in the Goals & Objectives email.

The report cards will look different this year, as they are completed on our new learning management system but they will contain all of the same information. For those that are new to The Craig School, the report cards will have elements you are used to seeing, and some that will look a bit different. You will see an overall grade and then a subset of skills for the main content areas. We intend that the details will help you understand your child’s strengths and areas of growth in all skill areas. The accommodations that the teacher employs to address your child’s unique learning profile along with your child’s work habits in the class are also listed on the report card. It is with these accommodations in place that your child has earned their respective grade.

If there are any questions the teachers or I can answer about the testing, our grading policy, or the accommodations for your child please do not hesitate to reach out. Those are conversations we love to have as we partner with you to celebrate our students’ perseverance and success.

I wish you all a very relaxing, joyous holiday season. I hope you have the time to take a break, catch your breath, and enjoy your family and friends.

Happy Holidays,

Jennifer Guthrie

Director of the Lower & Middle School
