THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Message from the Director

THE FINAL CHIL: Week of June 9th, 2025

As our school year winds down, so too does our weekly newsletter.  This is our final CHIL for this school year, and to send you off to summer, we have included a few important dates that we thought you might want to put on your fall calendar.

But for our final week, just a reminder that all this week we have 12PM close days.  MON, June 9, and TUES, June 10, are final exam prep days with exams to be held on WEDS, June 11, and THURS, June 12.  Our week and school year will culminate on FRI, June 13th, with our annual end-of-the-school-year Spirit Day.

It has been an amazing school year and one that we could not have pulled off without the trust and support of you, our parents. Have a wonderful and fun-filled summer, and if we don’t see you over the summer, we will catch up with you in the fall.

Dr. Cap

COMMUNITY NEWS

CHS Community Service at the Renaissance-Summer Garden: A handful of CHS students were part of a recent community service gardening project at the Renaissance Nursing Home in Lincoln Park. Our students met many of the residents and shared some smiles to brighten everyone's day.

Working alongside the Renaissance residents, our CHS students helped with planting kale, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, and strawberries. They also used their floral arranging skills to put together some beautiful planters. But most importantly, they provided great conversation, encouragement, and a sense of community to our hosts.

We enjoyed meeting everyone there and seeing the koi fish in the community garden, and we hope to build on this community service opportunity for future events with the great folks at the Renaissance. Thank you again to our amazing student gardeners, Mary, Madison, Charlie, Sivert, and Max.  And a shout out to our Director of College Counseling, Dr. Skerker, for coordinating the opportunity for CHS to spend some time with our neighbors.

ALUMNI EVENTS

Maya, CHS Class of 2020, Completes 1st Year of Teaching at the Gifft School: CHS Alum (CHS Class of 2020) and Centenary University Grad (2024), Maya, just completed her first year of teaching at the Gifft School (https://www.giffthillschool.org/) located on the island of St.Johns in the Virgin Islands.

The Gifft School began as the Pine Peace School (grades preschool-6) in 1978 and merged with the Coral Bay School (grades 7-9) in 2004 to become the Gifft School of today. Maya teaches preschool and shared that year one was an amazing year of learning, discovery, and meeting people from all over the world.  During her most recent Spring Break, she traveled with a group of teachers to Machu Picchu.  We always knew she would be an amazing teacher, and we were right!

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS

CHS Physics Class Final Launch Outdoes SpaceX’s Most Recent Launch:  The CHS Physics Class wrapped up their academic year by using Newton's Laws and the Laws of Motion to predict the flight of a model rocket, aptly named “Graduation 2025”.  “Graduation 2025” has a mass of 350 grams [ about 12 oz ] and was launched using a rocket motor that provided 32 Newtons of force for about 0.3 seconds at the initial launch.  After launch, the thrust was reduced to 10.5 Newtons for a total burn time of 1.6 seconds.

Using Newton's second law, our Class of 2025 scientists calculated the average acceleration to be around 30 m/s/s.  That is about 3 times normal gravitational acceleration.  Next, the Laws of Motion allowed them to calculate the speed at burnout to be 48 m/s [ 107 mph ]. This took the rocket to a height of 38 meters [ 125 feet ] at rocket burnout, but it coasted quite a bit higher.

The parachute was deployed at the top of the flight, and it landed safely, all parts intact, in the CHS parking lot.   According to Mr. Simpson, any fun that was had by the Class of 2025 was an unplanned side effect of the science we accomplished!

Advancement

THE CRAIG GOLF EVENT NEEDS YOUR HELP:  Here are 2 ways you can help.  First, our online auction will run alongside the outing, and we need your help to make it a success! Thanks to our generous Craig families, we’re bringing back the Amazon Wish List for easy item donations. Simply select an item, and it will be shipped directly to Craig School to be bundled into auction packages.

How You Can Help the Auction:

  • Golf Club Connections – If you’re a golf club member or know someone who is, a golf foursome donation or a member and a threesome would be a sought-after auction item.
  • Auction Donations – Have season tickets, a vacation home, or access to unique experiences? Consider donating them! Gift cards are also great additions.
  • Monetary Contributions – Cash donations are welcome! Make checks payable to The Craig School and drop them off at the Blue House.

Every contribution - big or small - helps make this event successful. Thank you for supporting Craig’s largest fundraiser!  For questions, contact: Amanda Jahn (ajahn@craigschool.org), or Mary Calvano (mcalvano@craigschool.org)

The second way to help - attend the outing and/or dinner.  Details are:

The cost is $40.00 (check, made out to “The Craig School ''). Yearbooks will be distributed next week.

CHS Summer Reading 2025:  Here is the link to your summer reading (CHS Summer Reading Options and Logs).  Attached are the titles and a brief description of our summer reading book options, a selection of highly regarded YA books.  Each has a link to Amazon where they are available in various formats, from paperback to Audible to Kindle.  Most of the books are on the LEARNING ALLEY app, so once they make a choice, if you email me (ECaparulo@craigschool.org) the book, we can add it to their LEARNING ALLEY online bookshelf through their Craig School account, so they have the option of listening to it on the Learning Ally Audio App.

Each student will have two summer reading responsibilities. One is to keep a reading log (blanks enclosed, make copies as necessary) to chart progress and summarize after each reading session.  The Second will be to choose a reading project from the enclosed list of project choices.  There are a few options and truly something for everyone to express their creativity and convey their interpretation of their summer reading.  Reading Logs and projects will be due on the first day of school.

For those students coming to summer school, our summer English Teachers will help kids stay on track with their summer reading.
