THE CRAIG SCHOOL

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Message from the Director

Next week, our students will be participating in our Spring MAP Growth Testing.  MAP Growth is a nationally recognized assessment that measures skills in reading, language usage, and math and an insightful tool that we use at CHS to better understand each of our students’ academic growth and their learning needs.

What makes this test unique is that it is designed to adjust to each student’s responses in real time, giving us a more accurate picture of where they are at at this point in time and how much growth they have made over the course of the school year.  It also allows us to celebrate their progress and guide our instruction.  We will be testing in the morning on designated days, and then follow our 10AM delayed opening schedule so that all classes will meet each day.  Students will be testing on their laptops so if you could give a little weekend reminder to charge them up, that would be great.

Also, this week, our MAY LUNCH DELIVERY ordering window closes this Monday (April 27th), so if you haven’t already, jump on that (www.myfooddays.com).  Prom ticket sales are off to a slow start, but we are thinking they will pick up this week. Tickets are $70 per, and students are welcome to bring guests. Here is to a great week,

Dr. Cap

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS

Physics in Action: Conservation of Energy

Recently, our CHS Physics students have been exploring one of the most fundamental principles in science: the Law of Conservation of Energy.

Their scientific investigation began with a close look at friction.  Our student scientists calculated the percentage of energy lost in a system due to frictional forces, validating the idea that while energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can be transformed into different forms.

Once they had their working theory, we put it to the test.  A Hot Wheel Test! By carefully analyzing how Potential Energy (energy due to the height of the track) converts into Kinetic Energy (energy due to the speed of the hit wheels), our scientists were able to determine the minimum starting height required for the car to successfully complete a full vertical loop.

Any fun experienced during this experiment was, of course, an entirely unintended side effect that sometimes happens in Mr. Simpson’s Physics class.

ATHLETICS

Badger ESPORTS Home Openers

The Badger ESPORTS Team wrapped up their first home matches of the season last week, which, in the ESPORTS world, is a fun way to say we had to set up the game lobby and invite our HS guests to join us. First up was Manchester HS of Ocean County.  The Badgers Team II battled but ended up on the short end of a 2-0 final score to the league leaders.

Next up was Shawnee High School, which is located in Burlington County.   Elijah and Miles gave them a run for their money, with Asher and Erin joining the Mario Kart battle. Each race was close, but not close enough, as the Badgers dropped a 2-0 final to Shawnee High.

We wrapped up our home stretch with Liberty High School, which is located in Jersey City. Christian and Mike B continued to put CHS ESPORTS on the map.  Freshman Cal pulled out the race of the day, snatching a 3rd place at the finish line to help secure our 2-0 win.  In our next ESPORTS league matchups, we take on Southern Regional HS, located in Manahawkin, and South Plainfield HS in Middlesex County. Go Badgers!
